Heap of Broken Images

JarmanposterI presented a talk and made an installation as part of a study day at UCL on¬†13 February 2014¬†considering the sites Derek Jarman inhabited as he produced his art, films, writing, gardens and activism. The talk focused on Jarman’s 1987 film ‘The Last of England’ – a cine-poem staged on/occupying the combined rubble of WWII and the large-scale demolition of London Docklands. I explored Jarman’s methodology of creative ‘rag picking’ in relation to the sites he was inspired by and occupied, and their influence on his visions of dereliction – all in the pursuit of an archaeology of hope that is aligned with my own creative methodology of salvage and transformation.
